Fostering the “Fail Forward” Culture: How Pop Art Theatre is Shaping the Next Generation of Arts Entrepreneurs

Fostering the "Fail Forward" Culture: How Pop Art Theatre is Shaping the Next Generation of Arts Entrepreneurs

In the heart of the creative industry, where art and business often intersect, Pop Art Theatre has carved out a vital niche. Operating out of an intimate 40-seater venue, this PTY company has transformed from a simple performance space into a high-impact incubator for youth development.

Pop Art Theatre prioritises a learning and failing forward culture and equips young professionals with the skills needed to grow their careers or to start their own businesses.  The company has built a strong partnership with Lucha Lunako for over six years, providing young professionals with real-life industry experience for 12 months to start building the foundation for their careers.

Selecting Young Professionals Beyond the Usual Networks

Pop Art Theatre not only seeks young professionals from established theatre pipelines, but also those from different disciplines who show professional presentation, know-how and a willingness to learn. In this manner, they are able to build a truly diverse cohort of five or six individuals for their 12-month work placement programmes each year.

“We look for people who can articulate why this benefits them and how they fit. In an entry-level position, you need a broad idea of the industry. Our interview process is less about a rigid checklist and more about ethos, ethics, and brand alignment.” – Hayleigh Evans, Pop Art Theatre Co-Founder

Pop Art provides practical experience from day one with a minimum wage stipend for entry-level positions and hands-on, scope-based roles designed to prepare young professionals for the industry upon completing their cohort.

A Holistic Approach to the Arts

While many internships pigeonhole youth into narrow tasks, Pop Art Theatre ensures every participant understands the full ecosystem of the theatre business. Every recruit participates in front-of-house operations before branching into specialised tracks:

Technical and Stage Management: Learning what is required to ensure a production runs smoothly from rehearsals to the final curtain call.

Marketing: From show promotion to service strategy.

Partnerships and Production: Learning the entire end-to-end process of a production and how to build partnerships.

Business Administration: Understanding the nuts and bolts of running an independent company.

Applying the “Fail Forward” Philosophy

The motivation behind this intensive placement is rooted in identity. Pop Art Theatre finds its purpose in the youth space. By staying lean and scaled, they offer a “learning and failing forward” culture that larger institutions often struggle to provide.

Working in a freelance-heavy industry, it is not always possible to absorb young professionals from the programme as permanent employees, nor is that always the goal. Success is measured by:

Learning the skills necessary to create a clear map of their future career and finding the opportunities that will build on the foundation they received.

Making connections that keep professionals on a roster for certain roles.

Referrals from previous clients.

Furthering the relationship with Pop Art beyond the programme, where the company contracts the young professionals to work on projects.

Pop Art doesn’t just want to train employees; they want to spark businesses. Every production that enters the space is treated as an entrepreneurial case study.

“Everyone who engages in this space is an entrepreneur in themselves. If someone has an idea adjacent to us, like POP Tech, a unit to connect technicians with schools, we want to help grow it alongside us.” – Hayleigh Evans, Pop Art Co-founder

The Pop Art Legacy

Through ethical alignment and empathetic leadership, Pop Art Theatre is doing more than putting on plays. They are building a database of seasoned, tech-savvy, and business-minded creatives who know how to navigate the complexities of the South African arts landscape. In this 40-seater venue, the future of the industry is being rehearsed every single day.

From Pop Art perspective, the benefit is product development. Grounded in a variety of people and lived experiences. Could potentially do testing of the product. Opportunity for Canva to partner with creatives in the industry to localise.
