Lucha Lunako on CapeTalk’s Good Morning Cape Town with Lester Kiewit

Earlier this week, Themba Skosana, financial educator and lead facilitator of Lucha Lunako’s Foundations for Financial Freedom programme, joined Good Morning Cape Town with Lester Kiewit on CapeTalk 567 AM to discuss a growing conversation around youth finances.

The discussion explored the idea of financial nihilism, a mindset increasingly seen among younger generations who feel that traditional financial milestones such as home ownership or long-term savings may be out of reach.

During the interview, Themba shared why financial education needs to go beyond numbers and budgeting tools and focus more deeply on the mindset, beliefs, and habits that shape people’s relationship with money.

Why mindset matters in financial education

Many young people today are navigating complex financial pressures, rising costs, social media influences, and uncertainty about long-term financial stability.

Through programmes like Foundations for Financial Freedom, Lucha Lunako works with young people and early-career professionals to explore their relationship with money before introducing technical tools like budgeting or financial planning.

As Themba explained during the interview, financial behaviour often begins with mindset long before it appears in a spreadsheet.

Building financial agency

At Lucha Lunako, we believe that while wealth can sometimes be inherited, it can also be built intentionally through habits, stewardship, and informed decision-making.

Our programmes aim to help young people recognise that financial capability is not determined solely by income, but also by how they understand, manage, and think about money.

If your organisation is exploring ways to support young people with practical financial education, our Foundations for Financial Freedom programme can be integrated into graduate programmes, youth initiatives, and workplace readiness programmes.
