We Were Told “Just Get a Job” — Now What?
Finding a job right now can feel brutal. You apply everywhere, tweak your CV over and over, pray before opening emails, and still hear nothing back.
For many of us, getting a job feels like the one thing that will finally solve everything: money problems, family pressure, stress, and stability. But here’s the truth nobody really tells you: a job is important, but it cannot carry your whole identity.
The world of work is changing fast. Building a career today isn’t just about getting employed; it’s about building skills, confidence, relationships, and finding different ways to generate an income over time.
The Reality of the Exchange
A job is an exchange. You give your time, energy, and skills, and in return, you get money and experience. And because it’s an exchange, things can change quickly. Companies downsize, contracts end, and industries shift. If your whole identity is attached to your job title, rejection or unemployment can completely destroy your confidence.
Remember; your worth is bigger than your employment status. A rejection email doesn’t mean you are useless. It usually just means that specific opportunity wasn’t the right fit at that exact moment. Painful? Yes. Personal? Not always.
Many of us were raised believing in a single formula; study, get a job, and stay there forever. But the world doesn’t work like that anymore. Today, survival looks like a mix of side hustles, freelancing, online work, small businesses, and full-time jobs. Needing multiple streams of income doesn’t mean you’ve failed… it means you are becoming creative and strategic.
Building Your Personal Brand:
The 5 C’s
At Lucha Lunako, we teach young professionals the 5 C’s of personal branding:
- Character
- Confidence
- Caring
- Connection
- Competence
Employers aren’t just looking for qualifications on paper. They are looking for people who can adapt, communicate well, solve problems, and grow.
Your personal brand isn’t about trying to be “internet famous.” It’s your reputation. It’s what people say about you when you aren’t in the room. Do people trust you? Do you communicate clearly? Do you show up on time? Those things matter. Sometimes, the right opportunity comes because of who recommends you, not just what is written on your CV.
You Are the Asset
Shift your mindset and start thinking of yourself as an asset. Ask yourself:
- What skills can I improve today?
- What can I learn for free online?
- What problems can I solve in my community?
- What small service can I offer right now?
Whether you braid hair, edit videos, design posters, fix phones, or manage social media pages, small beginnings count. The goal right now isn’t to get rich overnight; it’s to build options for yourself.
If you are unemployed right now, do not let it convince you that your life is standing still. You are still learning, growing, and becoming. And if you are in a job you hate, ask yourself: what skills can I extract from this place before I move forward?
The economy is tough, and we are trying to survive systems that weren’t exactly built with us in mind. That’s why we need a double approach: better opportunities from employers, and the mindset to build opportunities for ourselves.
At Lucha Lunako, we believe young people deserve safe, respectful workplaces where they can grow. But we also believe you should never forget your own power and agency.
Keep building. Keep learning. Keep networking. Keep showing up.
Your job is only one part of your story, not the whole book.
